How to Remove Smell From a Sweater Without Washing

A sweater is the one garment you should not wash after every wear: each wash costs it shape, softness and size. Through a Delhi, Lucknow or Chandigarh winter, that means a sweater is worn twenty or thirty times between washes. How to keep it fresh — and why wool and acrylic behave so differently.
How do you remove smell from a sweater without washing it?
Air it flat or on a wide hanger in moving air overnight, inside out, so the underarms and neckline face the air. If it still smells, mist the inside of the underarms, neckline and cuffs with a fabric odor spray from 15–20 cm and let it dry fully. Wool recovers well with airing; acrylic usually needs more help.

Winter in north India runs from November to February, and a sweater worn most days in that stretch faces an awkward trade-off. Wash it often and it shrinks, felts or loses shape. Do not and it starts to smell — of you, of the dhaba fire, of the trunk it came out of. The answer is to wash rarely and refresh often.
Why do some sweaters smell more than others?
Wool resists body odor well; acrylic and polyester hold it. That difference decides how often you need to refresh.
Wool fibres absorb moisture vapour — the Woolmark Company, the wool industry's body, says up to 35% of their weight — which keeps sweat off the skin and limits the conditions odor bacteria like. In a study by Rachel McQueen at the University of Alberta, odor intensity on wool was lower than on polyester after wear. Most budget sweaters sold in India are acrylic, which behaves more like polyester: it holds body oils and smells sooner.
| Sweater | Holds body odor | Washing tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| Wool, merino | Low | Low — shrinks and felts |
| Wool-acrylic blend | Medium | Medium |
| Acrylic | Higher | Higher, but pills and stretches |
| Cotton knit | Medium | Medium — stretches when wet |
How do you air a sweater properly?
Flat or on a wide hanger, inside out, in moving air, overnight.
- Take it off and air it the same evening. Do not leave it balled up on a chair.
- Turn it inside out so the underarms and neckline face the air.
- Lay it flat on a bed or rack, or use a wide, padded hanger. A thin wire hanger stretches the shoulders.
- Moving air helps: a fan, an open window in daytime, or a balcony in the shade. Winter sun is gentle enough for an hour on wool.
How do you refresh a sweater that still smells?
Treat the zones from the inside, and let it dry fully before folding.
Mist the inside of the underarms, the neckline and the cuffs from 15–20 cm, 2–3 sprays per zone. ODORSTRIKE is made for wool, cotton, polyester and blends, including acrylic blends. HPβCD traps odor molecules in the fibres and Zinc PCA neutralises them. Knits are thick, so give it longer than a shirt to dry — leave it flat for a few minutes before folding.
Winter evenings mean bonfires, angithis, tandoors and dhabas, and a sweater soaks up smoke more than a shirt. Air it outdoors in the morning, then treat the front, sleeves and shoulders as well as the underarms. The smoke smell guide has more.
How often should you actually wash a sweater?
Wool and merino: a few times a season, or when visibly dirty. Acrylic: every 5–7 wears. Always wear a shirt or vest underneath; it takes the sweat and lets the sweater go longer.
- Wash wool by hand or on a wool cycle, in cool water with a wool detergent.
- Do not wring. Press out water and dry flat in the shade.
- Never tumble-dry or hang wet knits; they stretch.
How do you store sweaters so they do not smell next winter?
Clean, dry and breathable — not in plastic with mothballs.
- Wash or air and dry every sweater fully before putting it away in March.
- Store folded in a cotton bag or box with a little air, not sealed plastic, which traps damp.
- Skip naphthalene mothballs; their smell is hard to remove — the mothball guide covers it. Cedar blocks or neem leaves are gentler.
- When you take them out in November, air them for a day. The stored clothes guide covers musty smell.
A fabric odor spray does not clean a dirty sweater, remove stains or fix pilling. It is not for leather, suede or dry-clean-only knitwear — check the care label. Fabric only, never skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get the smell out of a sweater without washing?
Air it flat or on a wide hanger, inside out, in moving air overnight. If it still smells, mist the inside of the underarms, neckline and cuffs with a fabric odor spray and let it dry fully.
Can I use ODORSTRIKE on wool?
Yes. Wool is one of the fabrics it is made for. Do not use it on dry-clean-only knitwear; check the care label.
Why does my acrylic sweater smell more than my wool one?
Acrylic behaves like polyester and holds body oils. Wool absorbs moisture vapour and resists body odor better.
How often should I wash a woollen sweater?
A few times a season, or when visibly dirty. Wear a shirt underneath and air it between wears.
How do I remove bonfire smoke from a sweater?
Air it outdoors, then treat the front, sleeves, shoulders and underarms with a fabric odor spray and let it dry flat.
