How to Remove Smell From a Saree and Blouse Without Washing

A woman in a red checked cotton saree and yellow blouse sits for a portrait against a dark background

A saree is worn for six hours and washed once a year, if at all. The blouse takes the sweat; the saree takes the almirah, the mothballs and the function hall. Two different smells, two different fixes, and a few fabrics to handle with care.

Quick answer

How do you remove smell from a saree and blouse without washing?

Air the saree unfolded in shade with moving air for a few hours to clear storage smell. For the blouse, turn it inside out and treat the underarm and back panels with a fabric odor spray from 15–20 cm, 4–5 sprays in total, then let it dry. Patch-test silk, zari and heavy embroidery on a hidden seam first.

The saree is fine. It is the blouse, close-fitting, often lined, worn through a long puja or a wedding lunch in October heat, that holds the sweat. And the saree, folded in the almirah since last Diwali, comes out smelling of naphthalene and cupboard.

Washing is not always an option. Silk sarees are usually dry-cleaned, and a blouse with embroidery is not something you throw in a machine every time. Here is what you can do between cleanings.

Why do blouses smell more than sarees?

The blouse sits tight against the underarms and back; the saree mostly does not. Close contact means more sweat, held longer.

Underarm sweat comes from apocrine glands and is rich in proteins and fats that skin bacteria turn into odor. A fitted blouse holds that sweat against the fabric for hours, and many blouses are lined with polyester, which holds odor more than cotton does. In a 2014 study in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, T-shirts collected from 26 people after a one-hour spinning session were smelled 28 hours later, and the polyester ones smelled significantly more intense and less pleasant than cotton (Callewaert et al., 2014). The saree drapes loosely, so apart from the pallu edge at the shoulder and the waist tuck, it rarely picks up sweat odor. Its usual problem is storage smell.

How do you remove sweat smell from a blouse without washing?

Turn it inside out, air it, then treat the underarm and back panels and let them dry.

  1. Air it inside out. Hang it in shade with a fan or an open window for 30 minutes. Never in direct sun if the colour or zari matters to you.
  2. Patch-test first. On a hidden seam, mist once and let it dry. If the fabric shows any mark, stop.
  3. Treat the zones. Mist the underarm panels and the upper back from 15–20 cm, 4–5 sprays in total, on the inside.
  4. Dry before folding. 15–30 seconds on cotton, a little longer on lined or heavy blouses. Never fold or pack a blouse while it is damp.

Use a fabric odor spray, not perfume or attar on the blouse. Perfume over sweat smells stronger, and oils can mark silk; if a blouse already carries too much perfume or attar, the perfume smell removal guide covers airing it out. ODORSTRIKE, a pocket clothing deodorant for a sweaty saree blouse, traps odor molecules with HPβCD and helps neutralise them with Zinc PCA, with a light fresh scent that fades. It goes on fabric only, never on skin.

How do you remove storage smell from a saree?

Unfold it and air it in shade, then refold it along new lines. Most almirah smell is trapped air, not stains.

Open the saree out fully on a clean bed or a line in shade, ideally a day before you need it. Moving air clears most cupboard and naphthalene smell in a few hours. Turn it once. If a cotton or blended saree still smells stale at the folds, a light mist on the inside of those folds, from 15–20 cm, then a full dry, will help. Our mothball and almirah smell guide explains why naphthalene clings so stubbornly.

Which sarees should you not spray?

Anything labelled dry-clean only. Heavy zari and delicate pure silks only if a hidden patch test is clean.

Before you sprayWhich fabric, which fix
  • Cotton, linen, georgette, chiffon, blendsAir, then treat inside
  • Pure silk (Kanjivaram, Banarasi)Air; patch-test or skip
  • Zari or heavy embroiderySpot-test or skip
  • Labelled dry-clean onlyLeave to the cleaner
  • Stained, oily or dampWash or clean

For a full wedding day in heavy festive wear, the timing of the refresh matters as much as the fabric; the guide to festive wear odor during long functions covers the before and mid-event routine.

ODORSTRIKE is not for dry-clean-only garments, leather or suede. When in doubt, air it and ask the cleaner.

How should you store sarees so they do not smell?

Clean, fully dry, wrapped in cotton, away from damp and light. Museum textile conservators give the same advice: too much moisture lets mould and mildew grow on textiles, and light fades them.

Honest limits

A fabric odor spray refreshes a clean blouse or saree. It does not remove sweat stains, oil marks or turmeric, and it does not replace dry cleaning for silks that need it. Always patch-test silk, zari and heavy embroidery on a hidden seam first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove sweat smell from a blouse without washing?

Turn it inside out, air it in shade for 30 minutes, then mist the underarm and back panels with a fabric odor spray from 15–20 cm and let it dry before folding. Patch-test silk and embroidery first.

How do I get musty smell out of a silk saree?

Unfold it fully and air it in shade with moving air for a few hours, turning it once. For a valuable silk that still smells, take it to a professional cleaner rather than spraying it.

Can I spray perfume on a saree?

Better not. Perfume covers smell without removing it, can mix badly with sweat, and oil-based attars can leave marks on silk.

Are naphthalene balls safe for silk sarees?

Their smell is absorbed by silk and is hard to remove. Many people prefer neem leaves or cloves in a cotton pouch, with the saree wrapped in muslin.
