How to Remove Sweat Smell From a Cap Without Washing

A cap gets worn on every sunny commute and almost never washed, because washing can wreck its shape. The smell lives in one strip of fabric: the sweatband. Here is how to keep it fresh between washes, and how to wash it without ruining the brim.
How do you remove sweat smell from a cap without washing it?
Air the cap upside down in moving air for a few hours so the sweatband dries fully, then mist the inside of the sweatband and the crown lining with a fabric odour spray from 15–20 cm, 2–3 sprays, and let it dry before you wear it. If the band is stained or stiff with sweat, hand-wash it instead.

A cap is the one item of clothing that sits on sweaty skin all day and goes straight onto a hook at night. A few weeks of commutes, cricket on the weekend and a humid walk to the bus stop, and the inside smells sour when you pick it up.
Why does a cap start to smell?
Because the sweatband soaks up forehead sweat and hair oil every wear, and almost never dries properly.
The forehead and scalp produce plenty of sweat and sebum. The sweatband, usually cotton or polyester, absorbs both and sits in a warm, closed shape on a hook. Skin bacteria break those oils and sweat down into odour, the same process that makes shirt collars smell. Researchers at Ghent University collected T-shirts from 26 people after a one-hour spinning session and had them smelled 28 hours later: the polyester ones smelled significantly more intense and less pleasant than cotton, and odour-linked micrococci grew almost only on the synthetics (Callewaert et al., 2014). Many caps have polyester sweatbands, so the reasons why polyester holds odour longer than cotton apply here too.
Where does the smell sit in a cap?
Mostly in the sweatband; then the crown lining and the back strap.
- Smells stale, band dry and cleanAir, then treat the band
- Damp from sweat or rainDry fully first
- Band stained or stiffHand-wash the band
- Leather or suede capNot for a fabric spray
- Sweatband: the strip that touches your forehead. Usually the source.
- Crown lining: the inside of the panels above your head, which traps heat.
- Back strap and closure: touches the back of your neck and hair.
How do you refresh a cap between washes?
Dry it fully, then treat the sweatband, then let it dry again.

- Hang it upside down or rest it on its crown in moving air for a few hours, sweatband exposed. Never leave a damp cap on a hook or in a bag.
- Brush off dust from the crown with a soft brush.
- Treat the inside. Mist the sweatband and the crown lining from 15–20 cm, 2–3 sprays in total.
- Dry before wearing. 15–30 seconds in dry weather, longer in humidity. The fabric should be dry to the touch before it goes on your head.
ODORSTRIKE, a pocket fabric spray for a sweaty cap sweatband, is a clothing deodorant that works on the band with HPβCD, which traps odour molecules in the fibres, and Zinc PCA, which helps neutralise them. It is for fabric only: let it dry fully before the cap touches your skin, and keep it away from your eyes.
How do you wash a cap without ruining it?
By hand, in cool water, with the brim kept dry or supported.
- Check the label. Some caps with cardboard brims or leather straps should not be soaked.
- Spot-clean the sweatband with a soft toothbrush and a little mild detergent in cool water.
- Rinse the band without soaking the whole cap.
- Dry on a rounded shape, such as an upturned bowl or a rolled towel, in shade with moving air. Never in a dryer or on a hot surface.
Avoid the washing machine and the dishwasher hacks you see online; both can warp the brim and fade the colour.
How do you stop a cap smelling so fast?
Rotate caps, let them dry between wears, and keep hair products off the band.
- Own two caps if you wear one daily; give each a day to dry.
- Wipe your forehead before putting a cap back on after sweating.
- Heavy hair oil and gel transfer straight to the sweatband.
- Store caps on an open shelf or hook, not stacked inside each other while damp.
In peak summer a cap can be soaked within an hour outdoors; the guide to staying fresh in a north Indian heatwave covers the rest of the outfit.
Hoodies have the same problem at the hood lining; the guide to refreshing a hoodie without washing covers it.
A fabric odour spray refreshes a clean cap; it does not remove sweat stains or grime from the band, which need a hand-wash. Never use it on leather or suede caps, and never spray it on skin or hair.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get sweat smell out of a cap without washing it?
Dry it upside down in moving air, then mist the sweatband and crown lining with a fabric odour spray from 15–20 cm and let it dry before wearing.
Can I wash a cap in the washing machine?
Better not. Machines can warp the brim and fade the colour. Hand-wash the sweatband in cool water and dry the cap on a rounded shape in shade.
Why does my cap smell sour?
The sweatband absorbs forehead sweat and hair oil, and bacteria break them down into odour, especially when the cap is hung up damp.
Can I use a fabric spray on a leather or suede cap?
No. ODORSTRIKE is for fabric only, not leather or suede. On a cotton or polyester cap, treat the sweatband and let it dry before wearing.
ODORSTRIKE — Fabric Odor Mist
50ml pocket spray for clothes. HPβCD traps odor molecules in the fabric and Zinc PCA neutralises them, instead of covering them with perfume. Dries in 15–30 seconds, up to 8 hours of odor protection on fabric under normal office/commute conditions. Fabric only, never skin.
