How to Remove Perfume Smell From Clothes

You over-sprayed, or the shirt came back from someone else smelling of their cologne, or a new jacket arrived drenched in shop fragrance. Perfume is made to last on fabric. Here is what actually removes it.
How do you remove perfume smell from clothes?
Air the garment inside out in moving air, ideally outdoors in shade, for several hours; most of the lighter notes evaporate. For what remains, wash it in cool water with detergent and dry it in moving air. For dry-clean-only items, air them and ask a cleaner. Spraying more fragrance over the top only adds a second layer.

Two sprays turned into five. Or your partner borrowed the jacket. Or the brand new kurta smells like the shop. Perfume is designed to stay on clothes for hours, sometimes days, which is exactly the problem when you want it gone.
Why does perfume cling to clothes?
Because fragrances are built in layers, and the heaviest layer is designed to hang on to whatever it lands on.
- Top notes evaporate first: citrus, light florals.
- Middle notes carry the main character.
- Base notes such as musks and resins cling, longest on synthetics and wool.
Airing clears the top and middle; a wash clears most of the rest.
A perfume has light top notes that evaporate in minutes, middle notes that last hours, and heavy base notes, often musks, woods and resins, that can last much longer. On skin, warmth and oils help them fade. On fabric, especially wool, synthetics and anything with a lining, base notes can sit for days. Oil-based attars cling even more.
How do you get perfume out without washing?
Time and moving air, in shade. Evaporation does most of the work.

- Turn it inside out and hang it on a hanger, not folded.
- Put it outdoors in shade or at an open window with a fan. Direct sun can fade colours.
- Give it hours. Most of the top and middle notes go within a few hours; base notes may take a day or two.
- Steam lightly if the fabric allows. Warm, moist air can speed evaporation on cotton and wool blends; check the care label.
What does not work: spraying a different perfume or a body spray on top. You get two fragrances fighting, plus the original.
How do you wash perfume out?
A normal wash with detergent, then air drying, removes most fragrance from washable clothes.
Wash as the care label allows, with a full dose of detergent and no fabric conditioner, which adds its own fragrance. Dry outdoors or in moving air. If a faint scent remains, a second wash usually clears it. Dry-clean-only items and silks should go to a cleaner.
Can a fabric odour spray remove perfume?
It is designed for sweat and environmental odours on clean clothes, not to erase a perfume. Be realistic about it.
Fabric odour sprays like ODORSTRIKE, made for sweat and everyday odour on clothes, work on the odour molecules that build up in a shirt as you wear it, using HPβCD to trap them and Zinc PCA to neutralise them. They are not a fragrance remover, and ODORSTRIKE itself has a light fresh scent. For a heavy perfume spill, airing and washing are the fixes. Where a fabric spray does help is the opposite situation: when people reach for perfume to cover a sweaty shirt, which our guide to perfume and sweat explains is a mistake.
How do you avoid over-perfuming clothes in the first place?
Perfume goes on skin, a little, before you dress; clothes get treated for odour, not scent.
- Spray perfume on pulse points, then dress after it has dried.
- Two sprays are usually enough; your nose stops noticing it long before others do.
- Keep perfume off silk, satin and light colours, where oils can mark.
- If your shirt smells of sweat, deal with the sweat, not with more perfume.
What about borrowed or second-hand clothes?
Air, wash, then wear. Someone else's fragrance and body odour both wash out of washable clothes.
Thrifted and borrowed clothes often carry several layers: fragrance, detergent and storage smell. Our guide to thrifted clothes walks through the order.
ODORSTRIKE is not a perfume remover and is never for skin. For heavy fragrance, air and wash. For silks and dry-clean-only clothes, ask a professional cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get perfume smell out of clothes fast?
Hang the garment inside out in moving air, outdoors in shade if possible, for a few hours. Steam lightly if the fabric allows. For washable clothes, a normal wash removes most of it.
Why won't perfume wash out of my shirt?
Heavy base notes such as musks and resins cling to fabric, especially synthetics and wool. A second wash without fabric conditioner, and air drying, usually clears it.
Can I cover perfume smell with another spray?
Spraying another fragrance on top adds a second layer and usually makes the smell stronger and stranger.
Does a fabric odour spray remove perfume?
It is made for sweat and everyday odours on clean clothes, not as a perfume remover. For heavy fragrance, airing and washing work better.
