Are Fabric Sprays Safe? How to Read the Label in India

Most people buy a fabric spray on the strength of a scent and a picture. The label tells you far more: who made it, what is in it, what it is for and what it is not. A plain guide to reading one in India, written by a brand that has to follow the same rules.
Are fabric odor sprays safe to use on clothes?
A fabric spray used as directed — on fabric, not skin, from the stated distance and allowed to dry — is made for regular use on everyday clothes. Check the label first: a named manufacturer and address, net quantity, MRP, date and a customer-care contact are required in India. Be wary of medical or germ-killing claims.

"Is it safe?" is the right question to ask about anything you spray near your face every morning. It has two parts: is the product what it says it is, and are you using it the way it was made to be used. The label answers the first. The directions answer the second.
What must a fabric spray label show in India?
Who made it, how much is in it, what it costs and how to reach the maker. Packaged goods sold in India fall under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and Rule 6 lists the declarations every retail pack must carry.
- Name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer
- Common or generic name of the product
- Net quantity in standard units (for a spray, ml)
- Month and year of manufacture or packing
- Retail sale price (MRP), inclusive of all taxes
- Consumer care details: a phone number or email for complaints
A spray with none of these — a blank bottle from a market stall, or a listing with no maker named — gives you no one to hold responsible if something goes wrong. That is reason enough to skip it.
What claims should make you suspicious?
Medical claims, germ-killing percentages and absolute promises. A clothing freshener is a household product, not a medicine, and claims that cross that line should be backed by proof you can see.
- "Kills 99.9% of germs" on a fabric freshener: ask what was tested, against what, and where the proof is.
- "Safe for skin" or claims of skin testing on a product meant for clothes: if it is for fabric, it should not need to be on your skin at all.
- "Leaves nothing behind on any fabric" or "works on all fabrics": no spray suits silk, leather and polyester equally.
- "Lasts all week" or "permanent freshness": your body makes new odor every day.
- Exact concentrations with no maker named: precise numbers on an anonymous bottle are decoration.
India's Central Consumer Protection Authority published guidelines on misleading advertisements in 2022, and they apply to product claims like these. You are entitled to ask a brand to back what it says.
What should a fabric spray tell you about ingredients?
At least what does the work, and how to ask about the rest. Many brands, including us, keep exact formulas and concentrations confidential. That is normal. What you should expect is a clear statement of the key actives and a contact for allergy questions.
ODORSTRIKE names three key actives — HPβCD, a cyclodextrin that traps odor molecules; Zinc PCA, which neutralises them; and Triethyl Citrate, which helps prevent new odor forming — in a fast-drying water base. If you need the full list for an allergy check, write to info@smelloff.in. The key actives guide explains each one.
How do you use any fabric spray safely?
Spray clothes, not people, and let the fabric dry. These rules apply to every fabric spray, ours included.
- Fabric only. Never spray on skin, hair or your face. Hold the garment away from your body or take it off.
- Keep the stated distance — 15–20 cm for ODORSTRIKE. Closer wets the fabric in one spot.
- Let it dry before wearing: 15–30 seconds, up to 30–60 seconds in high humidity.
- Patch-test delicate fabrics such as silk, zari and embroidery on an inside seam first.
- Skip what the label excludes. ODORSTRIKE is not for leather, suede or dry-clean-only items.
- Spray in moving air, not in a closed cupboard, and avoid breathing in the mist.
- Keep it away from children and out of eyes. If it gets in your eyes, rinse with water.
Does a fabric spray damage or stain clothes?
Not when used as directed on the fabrics it is made for. ODORSTRIKE is for regular use on everyday washable fabrics — cotton, polyester, denim, blends and wool — and dries clear with no stiff residue from the recommended distance. Spraying too close or too much can leave a damp patch that takes longer to dry. Our stain guide covers the details.
How do you check a seller before buying online?
Look for a named business, a physical address, a returns policy and a working contact. Then check that the price on the listing matches the price on the brand's own site.
