Left Clothes in the Washing Machine Overnight? Fix the Smell

You started the wash before bed and forgot about it. By morning the drum smells sour and the clothes smell worse than when they went in. Here is what happened, and how to rescue the load without making it worse.
What do you do if clothes were left in the washing machine overnight?
Smell them. If they smell only faintly damp, run a short rinse and spin and dry them fully in moving air straight away. If they smell sour or musty, rewash them with detergent on the warmest setting the care labels allow, then dry them completely. A fabric spray cannot fix a sour wet load.

It happens in every house. The machine finished at 11 pm, everyone was asleep, and the load sat wet in a closed drum until morning. Now the clothes smell sour, a little like a wet dishcloth, and you are not sure whether to dry them or start again.
The answer depends on how long they sat and what they smell like. First, what is going on in there.
Why do clothes smell after sitting in the washing machine?
Because bacteria that survive the wash multiply in warm, wet, closed fabric and produce a sour odor.
- A few hours, smells clean or faintly dampRinse and spin, dry now
- Overnight, smells sour or mustyRewash with detergent
- A day or more, or visible spotsRewash, check for mildew
- Machine smells even when emptied on timeClean the seal, drawer, filter
A wash does not sterilise clothes, especially a cool or quick cycle. Japanese researchers (Kubota et al., 2012) traced the classic "wet dishcloth" laundry smell to one bacterium, Moraxella osloensis, which produces a compound called 4-methyl-3-hexenoic acid. They found it tolerates drying and even ultraviolet light, which helps explain why the smell can survive a day on the line.
A closed drum full of wet clothes, at room temperature in an Indian flat, is close to ideal for growth. The longer the load sits, the more the smell builds.
Do you need to rewash clothes left in the machine?
It depends on the smell, not the clock. Use your nose.
- A few hours, smells clean or faintly damp: no rewash. Run a short rinse and spin if they feel heavy, then dry them straight away.
- Overnight, smells sour or musty: rewash with detergent.
- A day or more, or any visible spots: rewash, and check for mildew. Mildew spots may need a separate stain treatment.
In hot, humid weather, assume the shorter end: a load can turn in a few hours in a Mumbai or Chennai monsoon.
How do you save a load that smells sour?
Rewash, warmer if the labels allow, then dry it fast and completely.

- Rewash with detergent. Use the warmest temperature every item's care label allows. Do not just add more softener; perfume will not cover this smell for long.
- Do not overload. Clothes need room to rinse.
- Dry immediately. Take them out as soon as the cycle ends and hang them spread out, in moving air or sun. Slow drying is how the smell comes back.
- Check when dry. If a faint sour note remains, wash once more rather than wearing it.
A fabric odor spray is not the fix here. It is made for clean clothes that picked up sweat or environmental odor, not for a load that went sour in the drum.
Is the machine itself the problem?
Sometimes. A drum or door seal that stays damp passes the smell to every load.
If clean clothes smell even when you empty the machine on time, check the rubber door seal on a front-loader, the detergent drawer and the filter. Leave the door and drawer open after every wash and run an empty hot cycle every month. Our washing machine smell guide lists the six spots to clean.
How do you stop it happening again?
Make the end of the cycle impossible to miss, and never close a wet drum.
- Use the delay-start timer so the wash ends when you are awake, not at midnight.
- Set a phone alarm for the cycle's end time.
- Leave the door open after unloading so the drum dries.
- In monsoon, wash smaller loads more often so they dry faster.
What about clothes that dried with a faint smell?
If it is faint and the clothes are clean, a second wash is still the safest fix.
That faint "damp" note usually means drying was too slow. For clothes you have already worn once and want to wear again, sweat and environmental smell are a different problem, and that is where airing and a fabric odor treatment on the collar and underarms help. For drying problems, see our guide to why clothes smell bad after drying.
A load that went sour in the drum needs a rewash and a fast, complete dry. No spray, softener or perfume reliably fixes it. Use fabric odor sprays on clean, dry clothes that picked up smell while you wore them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it bad to leave wet clothes in the washer overnight?
Often, yes. Bacteria that survive the wash multiply in warm, wet, closed fabric. If the load smells sour in the morning, rewash it.
How long can wet clothes stay in the washing machine?
In Indian heat and humidity, a few hours at most. If they smell clean, dry them straight away; if they smell sour, rewash.
Will fabric softener fix a sour load?
No. Softener adds perfume and a film, and the sour smell usually comes back as the clothes warm up. Rewash and dry fast.
Can I use a fabric spray instead of rewashing?
No. A fabric odor spray is for clean, dry clothes that picked up smell while worn, not for a wet load that went sour in the drum.
ODORSTRIKE — Fabric Odor Mist
50ml pocket spray for clothes. HPβCD traps odor molecules in the fabric and Zinc PCA neutralises them, instead of covering them with perfume. Dries in 15–30 seconds, up to 8 hours of odor protection on fabric under normal office/commute conditions. Fabric only, never skin.
