How Often Should You Wash Pajamas and Nightwear?

Most people wear the same night suit for most of a week, and a lot of people are not sure whether that is fine. The answer depends on your weather, whether you shower before bed and how much you sweat at night.
How often should you wash pajamas?
The American Cleaning Institute suggests washing pajamas after three or four wears. In Indian summer or if you sweat at night, wash them every one or two wears. If you shower before bed and sleep in AC, three or four wears is reasonable. Air them every morning on a hanger, not under the pillow.

Night suits live a quiet life: folded under the pillow in the morning, back on at night, washed "when they need it". In a cool, dry climate, that might be once a week. In a humid Chennai summer, it is too long.
How many times can you wear pajamas before washing?
About three or four wears in mild weather, one or two in heat or if you sweat at night.
The American Cleaning Institute, the US cleaning industry's trade body, groups pajamas with jeans and sweaters as items to wash after every three or four wears, and notes that showering before bed can stretch that. That advice is written for cooler, drier homes. In Indian summers without AC, most people sweat in their sleep, and the count drops.
Why does Indian weather change the answer?
Because night sweat, humidity and slow drying all shorten how long nightwear stays fresh.
Sweat at night soaks into the back, underarms and collar of a night shirt for seven or eight hours, then the shirt is folded warm under a pillow, where it cannot dry. In humid weather, bacteria have more time to turn that sweat into odour. Synthetic nightwear holds odour more than cotton; researchers at Ghent University found polyester held far more odour after the same wear (Callewaert, 2014).
What wear count fits your nightwear?
Match it to fabric, season and your habits.
- Cotton, AC, shower before bed3–4 wears
- Cotton, fan only, summer1–2 wears
- Polyester or satin1–2 wears
- Heavy night sweats or unwellEvery night
- Cotton, AC room, shower before bed: three or four wears.
- Cotton, fan only, summer: one or two wears.
- Polyester or satin: one or two wears; they hold sweat smell.
- You sweat heavily at night, or are unwell: every night.
- Pyjama bottoms: can usually go one or two wears longer than the top.
How do you keep nightwear fresh between washes?
Let it dry and air every morning; never fold it warm under the pillow.

- Hang it up in the morning, inside out, on a hanger or a hook in moving air.
- Check it before night two: smell the collar, underarms and back.
- Refresh if it is clean but stale: mist the collar and underarms with a fabric odour spray from 15–20 cm, then let it dry fully before you put it on.
- Wash if it smells of sweat, feels damp or has stains.
For step three, a pocket fabric odour spray like ODORSTRIKE uses HPβCD to trap odour molecules in the fabric and Zinc PCA to neutralise them, with only a light scent that fades, which matters at bedtime. Let it dry fully before you wear it, and never spray it on skin.
What about bedsheets and pillow covers?
Wash them on their own schedule; nightwear does not protect the bed.
Bedding collects sweat, skin and hair whatever you wear, and cleaning experts commonly suggest washing sheets weekly. Fabric odour sprays like ODORSTRIKE are for clothes only, not for bedding, pillows or mattresses. For the clothes side of your laundry, our guide on washing less without smelling covers which items can go longer between washes.
How many sets of nightwear do you need?
Three or four sets for most people, more in summer.
That lets one set be worn, one air, one in the wash and one spare for a sweaty night or a monsoon week when nothing dries. Cotton sets with loose fits are the easiest to keep fresh in Indian weather.
A fabric odour spray refreshes clean nightwear; it does not replace washing after sweaty nights. Always let it dry fully before wearing, and never use it on skin, bedding or pillows.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many times can I wear pajamas before washing?
About three or four wears in mild weather, if you shower before bed. In Indian summer or if you sweat at night, wash them after one or two wears.
Is it bad to wear the same night suit all week?
In hot or humid weather, yes. Night sweat builds up and the fabric cannot dry folded under a pillow. Air it daily and wash it more often in summer.
Should pyjama bottoms be washed as often as tops?
Bottoms can usually go one or two wears longer than tops, unless you sweat heavily at night.
Can I use a fabric spray on bedsheets?
ODORSTRIKE is for clothes only, not bedding, pillows or mattresses. Wash sheets on their own schedule.
